Exfoliation is simply the removal of
dead skin cells.
Ancient Egyptians and, most probably, Cleopatra were the originators of exfoliation. Kings and queens used alabaster and pumice to remove royal blemishes and rough, dry skin.
Today we are much luckier and have products that are safe and more effective for own majestic mature skin.
The outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, is a tough, flat layer of dead skin cells. Daily, new cells form in the inner most layer of the epidermis and reach the skin surface in about 30 days.
Exfoliation is a natural process. In our teens, our skin renewed itself on average every 2 week. By our 40's that renewal time decreases to every 4-5 weeks and the renewal time doubles again by our mid-70's. To have smooth, fresh and glowing skin, it helps to help nature.
Should Mature Skin Be Exfoliated?
Absolutely. As we age, cell renewal and regeneration slows. Excess layers of dead skin cells make the skin dull, lusterless and looking even older.
The time necessary to replace the stratum corneum barrier, outermost of the 5 layers of the epidermis, takes twice as long for a 75 year old than for a 30 something.

Renewal is also slowed in skin that has thickened from sun damage. Exfoliation helps even out mottled hyperpigmentationcaused by sun damage.
Kinder Gentler Acids
Poly and Alpha hydroxy acid exfoliate mature skin without the burning or stinging associated with Beta hydroxy acid. The BHAs are useful for oily skin but are unnecessary in eliminating the excess build up of skin cells on aging or sensitive skin.
The kinder gentler acids are derived from citrus fruits, milk and sugar. These acids can also stimulate collagen production.

The Mugwort Plant
Mugwort is considered a magical herb. Sacred to the Druids. Tea made from Mugwort is used to enhance and encourage prophetic dreams. It has calming properties and is said to be 1 of 9 sacred herbs given to the world by the god Woden.
Added to exfoliation treatment products, Mugwort calms skin and provides anti-inflammatory benefits.
Additional Benefits of Exfoliation
Exfoliation encourages nourishing blood to flow to the surface of the skin. It removes impurities and toxins that block the pores and eliminates that bumpy look.
Like no other facial treatment, accelerating skin cell replacement will enhance your appearance immediately. It will reduce the appearance of fine lines and allow hydration that was being prevented by
scaled skin cells.
Easy Does It Better
While exfoliation is necessary for that healthy glow, mature skin requires gentle and quality products specifically designed for aging skin. Only you or your esthetician can answer how to often you should exfoliate but, generally, no more than 3 times per week and once a week is probably more appropriate.
- Find the product that works best for you and follow instructions.
- Never exfoliate if your skin is irritated or inflamed skin
- Don't exfoliate without consulting your dermatologist if you have skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea.
- Don't overdo. Stop and remove the product if you feel stinging or burning.
- Use a moisturizer immediately after exfoliating.
- Avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours or use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 for a couple of days.
